I paced. Nemat had kicked me out of my bedroom while she worked her medical magic to get Rhian as comfortable as possible. I found it harder to hold on to her soul parted from her, but I’d always been accused of being stubborn.

My bare feet—sore from the gorse and sharp, flinty rocks on the embankment at Rhian’s accident site—made a path on the cool tile of the floor in the hallway in front of my bedroom. I called out, “Ziya, will you please get a hold of Rhian’s assistant at the embassy? What’s her name? Meg, that’s it. Tell her what’s happened, and that Rhian is alive, but wounded.” I caught Ziya’s gaze with mine. “Do it in person and be as gentle as you can; Meg’s in love with Rhian.”

Ziya didn’t say anything, just grabbed his keys and left to tell Meg that her mistress was a mangled pile of meat.

The door opened behind me, and Nemat stepped outside. She held up a brusque hand, halting my words. “Yes, you can go in to see her now. She’s as comfortable as I can make her. I’ve got her sedated, so don’t be surprised if she doesn’t react. Don’t move her; I haven’t put any casts on her, even though she broke or out-right shattered most of her bones in the fall. She’s the Dark God’s own; I’m afraid casts would impede healing.

“She also has fluids and a catheter. She’s still a mess, I haven’t dared do more than a cursory wash for her yet. You’ll have to keep feeding her; she won’t be able to take actual food for a while.” She pinned me with worried golden eyes. “You need to take care of yourself, too, Kai, or you won’t be able to care for her.”

I nodded and shoved a hand into my still damp, tangled hair. It hurt.

“Thank you, Nemat. I’m in your debt.”

She stepped close to me and laid a fond, but not possessive hand on my chest, going to her tiptoes she kissed the edge of my jaw. “No debt between us. Go in to her now, I know how much you love her. Lynn is here for when you need to feed and Ziya and I will bring our servants as well, so you don’t strain Lachlan too much. We’ll have your stable called up too, if needed. We’ve got your back, just take care of the two of you.”

I wrapped my friend, lover, and metaphysical daughter in my arms for a moment and shuddered. She held me as tears slid down my face at the scares we’d all had. At the fear that I’d lost Rhian, that I’d still lose her.

Memories of my panicked run from my estate overwhelmed me now that I had the luxury to feel again. My feet burned, I don’t think I’d ever moved as fast in my life as from the moment I felt the impact to when I dived into the river to find Rhian. It wasn’t
